Nokia Siemens Networks supplies mobile network for Turkish railway

The Turkish railway administration, T.C. Devlet Demiryolları (TCDD) is working with Nokia Siemens Networks to build a new communications network for the 158 kilometre high speed rail line between Inonu and Kosekoy.

This line is the second phase of the 533 high-speed project connecting Ankara with Istanbul. In 2009, TCDD built a GSM-R network for the existing 275 kilometer Ankara-Inonu line.

— Building a reliable, interoperable railway communications network is important for TCDD as per European Union regulations, says Erkan Tezcanli, head of customer team at Nokia Siemens Networks.

To build the Inonu-Kosekoy communications network, Nokia Siemens Networks is providing its GSM-R radio network equipment, including base stations and base station controllers.

In addition, the company is supplying GSM-R user equipment, including handheld devices, train cabin radios and dispatcher terminals. It is also delivering repeaters to enable better network coverage in tunnels.

Nokia Siemens Networks’ advanced radio system will provide reliable communications between the train driver and guard in the moving high-speed train and operations centre on ground.

This is expected to improve the efficiency of railway operations to reduce train delays and enhance the security of railway stations and safety of passengers.

With this project, the company’s GSM-R commercial lines will increase to over 46,000 kilometres worldwide. With this, the company has increased its GSM-R market share to 60 per cent globally, maintaining its leadership position.

In a separate announcement NSN says it has signed a deal to help the Norwegian National Rail Administration, Jernbaneverket, improve its communications network and passenger safety.
