From 29 November, free rides will be available for everyone on trial runs between Jungfernstieg and HafenCity – and transport to HafenCity on 1 December to an exciting day of concerts, DJs, cultural and kid’s acts, as well as late night shopping. When the timetable changes on 9 December 2012, regular U4 services will cover the route from Billstedt to Überseequartier.

After five years under construction, the U4 subway will connect the growing new district of HafenCity with Hamburg city centre initially along a four-kilometre stretch of line. This efficient link in Hamburg’s public network will immediately benefit the around 9,000 employees and 2,000 residents of HafenCity, as well as thousands of visitors. Later it will serve some 45,000 employees, 12,000 residents and between 50,000 and 100,000 visitors every day. The first HafenCity subway station going into service, Überseequartier – at the already busy interface between western and central HafenCity – will be followed by HafenCity University station, when the university opens. In parallel to the successful conclusion of the first section to HafenCity, planning to extend the U4 to Elbbrücken is in full swing.

The temporary terminus of HafenCity University station can be inspected from inside the train as of now: the U4 will be running regularly to the station during the trial services and after 9 December, at weekends and on holidays, too. The two first stations to open represent an architectonic homage to Hamburg’s life blood artery. Überseequartier station’s theme is the significance of water and it enables visitors to enter a submarine world. HafenCity University station, with its steel slabs and lighting features in container form, highlights how vital the port is for Hamburg.

HafenCity will be celebrating the U4 on 1 December with a day of activities. An array of more than 30 shops, restaurants, cafés and museums awaiting visitors will be open from 4pm to 10p, and offering a good day out for children and adults alike. An exciting competition is another draw, offering high-quality prizes. Tickets will be available on the day from participating businesses.

Hamburg’s Mayor Olaf Scholz: “HafenCity means a 40 per cent expansion for Hamburg City. New jobs are being created. Many guests to our city, many local people come to HafenCity – sometimes just to have a look in. And of course a growing number of Hamburgers also live there. All this demands good transport connections, which we are providing – including with the U4. HafenCity needs an efficient public transport system. The U4 is a very appropriate means of providing that. The U4 links the city centre and the central station with Überseequartier, HafenCity University and prospectively with Elbbrücken. Thus mobility is helping Hamburg to grow together.”
