LA Metro to Implement Clean Energy Flywheel Technology in its Red Line

The Los Angeles Metro announced this week that it will add VYCON’s clean energy flywheel technology to its Red Line Westlake/MacArthur Park Station. The $3.6 million dollar contract, which promises to save “a significant amount of energy” when in use, comes in addition to a 2 Megawatt photovoltaic system that’s already installed.

VYCON’s kinetic energy technology essentially uses the flywheel system to store energy generated by braking, and then uses that energy when the train accelerates. The tech should add another 2 Megawatts to the system, which should take some of the load off during peak train hours.

In the long run, VYCON believes the flywheel method could eventually replace chemical battery-based Traction Power Substation, which is predominantly used around the world.
