Indian Railways has scrapped a real-time train tracking system developed by the Indian Institute of Technology

Satellite Imaging for Rail Navigation (SIMRAN) was launched six months ago on 36 trains as a pilot scheme and ıt  was going to be rolled out across all trains running in the country .

The project will given to Indian Railways’ IT service unit, Central Railway Information System (CRIS).

To inform the users, IIT-Kanpur posted a message on the SIMRAN website: “As per decision of Railway Board in a meeting held on September 11, 2012 at Railway Board this site has been closed on October 1, 2012. SMS Service which was running on 09415139139 is also closed.”
