High-speed rail routes approved in France

The French Ministry of Transport has approved routes for high-speed rail (HSR) from Bordeaux to Toulouse and the Spanish border. The decision will enable French railway infrastructure manager Reseau Ferre de France (RFF) to prepare for a public enquiry which is expected to commence in mid-2013.

The Bordeaux-Toulouse HSR route has been selected after four years of consultation and studies that led to alterations to over 40 per cent of the original alignment. The route would leave the existing Bordeaux-Toulouse line near Saint-Médard-d’Eyrans, and run south and then east for 50 km to a triangular junction near Cudos. From here the branch would run southeastwards to rejoin the conventional network at Saint-Jory north of Toulouse, passing to the south of Agen and Montauban.

Meanwhile, the 240-km HSR line to the border would run south and then southwest to pass north of Mont-de-Marsan and Dax, and south of Bayonne to meet the Spanish HSR network south of Irún.
