Groundbreaking for Sofia metro railway extension to airport on November 21

A groundbreaking ceremony for the extension of the Sofia metro underground railway line from Drouzhba to Sofia Airport was scheduled for November 21 2012.

The new line will be five km long with four stations. A statement by Sofia municipality said that when the line is completed, people will be able to travel from the centre of the Bulgarian capital city to Sofia Airport in 15 minutes.

The project provides for a link to a small railway station at the intersection of Krasyu Pastouhov and Iskar road, which would enable people living in the southern and eastern districts of Sofia to catch the main-line train to Plovdiv.

Completion of the metro line that will connect central Sofia to the airport is scheduled for early 2015. About 1500 people will be employed on the extension project, the statement said.

On August 31 2012, a new Sofia Metro line was opened, linking the centre of the city to the Lozenets residential neighbourhood. It includes a link to the central main-line railway station. The line, which has 11 stations, brought the total of Sofia’s metro rail network to 27 stations and 31 kilometres.
