“Green Train” for greater comfort

In Sweden a research project on the train of the future has just been completed. Over a period of six years, the country’s railway industry and research institutions have developed the “Gröna Taget” (“Green Train”) to show what a high-speed train for the Nordic countries might look like.

Thus the “Gröna Taget” project was consistently oriented towards the requirements of the Nordic countries – although many of the ideas can and will be realised in other trains. One of the focal points of the project is comfort, especially for the mobility-impaired.

One objective is an attractive interior design, with the greater width of Nordic trains also creating a more generoussense of space. One area of attention is the entrance, which for wheelchair users determines whether the train can be used at all. To accommodate them, a swivelling lift was designed so that the difference in height between platform and vehicle fl oor presents no difficulty. Research was also carried out into recommendations for seat dimensions and seat pitch.

Some of the research findings have been implemented in the new Swedish State Railways SJ3000 train (series X55).
