Brussels wants to accelerate the development of Spain-Portugal line

The European Commission has sent a letter to the Ministry of Economy in Portugal and to the Ministry of Development in Spain insisting on the construction of a railway connection between Evora (Portugal) and Badajoz (Spain). The conventional broad-gauge line would permit trains to run at speeds of at least 200 km/h.

Portugal will have to build a 92-km long section Evora-Caya leading to a more direct connection between Lisbon and Madrid. Once the difficult economic context is overcome, the line could be modernised to permit speeds of 250 km/h or even of 300 km/h.

The line could be 95% financed using European funds. The proposal of the European Commission doesn’t reveal the cost of the project.
