BMT Help Deliver Cost Savings for VIA Rail Canada

BMT Group Ltd (BMT), the international engineering, maritime and risk management consultancy, through its specialist companies BMT Fleet Technology and BMT Reliability Consultants, has successfully completed a Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) study for VIA Rail Canada Inc.

BMT presented its final CBM project report to VIA Rail Canada in October 2012 which included recommendations to help VIA Rail Canada further improve levels of performance and availability across its rolling stock fleet, while reducing costs.

The project focused on VIA Rail Canada’s newly refurbished fleet of GPA-30H locomotives. BMT reviewed the company’s existing condition monitoring capability and recommended additional techniques and equipment. BMT also carried out a Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) analysis of the locomotive and its sub-systems including the newly installed Head End Power generating set. One output of the RCM study was to identify and add to the condition monitoring procedures and techniques that are currently used by VIA Rail Canada, in order to develop an optimised CBM strategy.

Bob Becker, Director of Technical Services and Chief Engineer for VIA Rail Canada comments: “We are delighted to have had BMT on board. The company brought a unique mix of experience and knowledge in carrying out condition monitoring tasks on our rolling stock. BMT’s customer focused approach from initial study to final report places VIA Rail on the correct track for optimised maintenance procedures, cost effective Condition Monitoring techniques and our ultimate goal of full Condition Based Maintenance. The initial recommendations have already produced significant cost reductions for the generator set overhauls, with more locomotive savings to come in the future.”

Aaron Dinovitzer, Vice President of BMT Fleet Technology, explains: “We are pleased VIA Rail Canada chose BMT to provide them with the tools to further improve their performance in this important aspect of fleet management. BMT’s experience in delivering significant improvements in maintenance programs helped ensure an equally successful outcome for VIA Rail Canada.”

He continues: “We’re driven by a belief that things can always be better, safer, and more efficient. This project is one of two which we are working on with VIA Rail Canada and both are a perfect example of how BMT can deliver complex projects using its global engineering resource, while still maintaining a local presence.”

Andrew Cooper, Managing Director of BMT Reliability Consultants, adds: “We’re delighted to have been able to assist this prestige rail transportation company in further improving their maintenance planning to achieve optimized availability and operating costs. Working with our colleagues in Canada, we have demonstrated the benefits of specialized expertise, combined with deep industry understanding, and global reach. We look forward to continuing our relationship with Via Rail Canada.”
