BKV to use traffic congestion fee for financing

Only a few weeks after news about the introduction of a congestion charge in Budapest were reported by the press Budapest mayor István Tarlós announced that it is no rumour and that the standard charge could be HUF 400-500 (EUR 1.4-1.7).

The introduction of a congestion fee is unavoidable to raise funds for the financing of the Budapest Transport Company (BKV), Tarlós said.

For now, the authorities have not yet established the way in which the fee should be applied, but they expect to obtain incomes of around HUF 8 Billion (EUR 27 Million) in the second half of 2013 and HUF 20 Billion (EUR 68 Million) in 2014.
