Azerbaijan to purchase new railway carriages

Azerbaijani Railways is considering proposals of Swiss company Stadler Rail on the purchase of passenger carriages, the head of the press service Nadir Azmamedov reported to Trend on September 26. He said the transition of railway track over Azerbaijan and Georgia to a narrower one through Turkey according to European standards has to be provided for the launch of the Baku Tbilisi Kars railway line.

“The carriages will have a suitable mechanism which will enable this kind of changeover to take place,” Azmamedov noted.
“Freight carriages also have to be purchased for the new railway line, but exceptional passenger carriages are going to be purchased from the Swiss company,” Azmamedov noted.

The 183 kilometre long railway section of the Akhalkalaki Marabda Tbilisi rail road has to be reconstructed in the framework of Baku Tbilisi Kars project in order to increase the capacity up to 15 million tons of freight a year. A centre on the carriage transition from Georgian track to European is going to be constructed in Akhalkalaki.
