National Rail Safety Regulator

The productivity and safety of Australia’s rail industry is currently impacted by inconsistencies between state and territory regulation. Australia’s regulatory system for rail needs to be modernised to reflect a national approach to transport policy planning and to support the safe, efficient and sustainable growth of the railway industry.

The establishment of a National Rail Safety Regulator will deliver better rail safety outcomes for Australia, as it will draw on a national pool of knowledge and resources. This historical reform will also remove red tape that currently makes it difficult for operators to improve productivity and efficiency while trying to meet different safety regulations in each state and territory.
