April start for Barcelona-Perpignan high-speed train

The high-speed train line linking the Spanish Mediterranean city of Barcelona with Perpignan in France will be finished before the year is out, and first trains will begin running in April, says the Barcelona regional government. Cost of line construction to the northern Spanish town of Figueres alone has been €4.2bn.

The Barcelona government said the trip to Perpignan will take one hour and 10 minutes. The rails have already been laid at the head of the Barcelona-Sants station, where the high-speed trains pass. They are currently being used only by laboratory-trains, engines equipped with the safety-control technology that test the new infrastructure. The connection from Sants station with the tunnel crossing the city towards Sagrera is practically finished and now being tested.

The Figueres-Perpignan section will pass through a tunnel under the Pyrenees, which is already finished and has been in service for some years after the Spanish and French governments in 2004, chose private sector builders and concessionaires to run the line. Cutting-edge materials have been used to build this infrastructure, which absorb all types of vibrations and noise, it said. Despite the high speeds, the acoustic impact will be minimal.
