A “Swallow” for Russia

For the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russian State Railways RZD will be taking delivery of 54 modern Desiro RUS regional multiple- unit trains from Siemens. Once the games are over, the trains will be transferred to Moscow, where they will operate regional express services, including to the airports.

Three ships for one train – shipping the outsized Desiro RUS from Krefeld to St. Petersburg posed a challenge for the logistics experts at DB Schenker. With a body just under fi ve metres high and 3.5 metres in width, it was not possible to transport the train by road or by rail.

So, over three nights, the fi ve cars of the first train were transported in February to the inland port at Krefeld. From there the journey continued by inland waterway vessel to the port of Amsterdam. There the cargo was transhipped to a coaster for the voyage to Mukran on the island of Rügen, where all the cars were brought together for the fi rst time and placed on broad-gauge track.

The complete train is 126 metres long and weighs 260 tonnes. From Mukran the rail ferry “St. Petersburg” took the train to Ust-Luga in Russia, from where it continued its journey by rail to St. Petersburg.

In Russia the train is nicknamed “Lastotschka” (“Swallow”). RZD has ordered a total of 54 Desiro RUS trains, 38 of which are being manufactured in Germany.
